The £10 screening test which has been created, which can be given during an ante-natal check-up, would give women found to be at risk from the debilatating condition the chance of being treated before giving birth.
Previous research did find genetic markers which linked to the illness but this is the first time that genetic variations have been found in the hormonal pathway which triggers it. Researchers now believe that changes in the levels of oestrogen during pregnancy make women more sensitive to the hormone which causes stress – cortisol. For ost women the balance resets after the baby is born but for those with genetic variations this doesn’t happen and this leads to post-natal depression.
This is such a breakthrough in the battle against post-natal depression and we can only hope that it saves many women from going through the horrors which can come from suffering this condition.
